Get Your Hot, Fresh Blog Here!

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Gah. I missed yesterday’s blog post. I’ve got a calendar that’s helping me keep up with my buffer of comics, but I don’t have something for my blog.

My comic is a long arc. The humor isn’t topical. I can work ahead as much as I like. However, I feel that my blog post should encompass my current feelings, thoughts, and thoughtful feelings. Also: what I’ve eaten recently.

I attend a book group that discusses classics. January’s book we read John Wesley Powell’s The Exploration of the Colorado River and Its Canyons. This book is part anthropological survey, part geological exploration, and part adventure yarn. Powell and his expedition where the first people to navigate the entire course of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.

Yes, there have been people in the area for hundreds of years prior to Powell. Yes, they had explored the canyon pretty well. So how can we be sure they didn’t do it first? Well, the locals weren’t stupid enough to try. They could see that it would be a foolhardy venture.

Powell knew enough to see that there was a blank spot on the map and that, by God, blank spots on maps are not to be tolerated. I’m not trying to denigrate Powell’s bravery. He lost an arm in the Civil War. He was a fit man, as he frequently climbed rocks to gather samples. He knew how to mount a field expedition. He knew nothing abouts boats, boating, and rivers. Or botany.

Between the rapids and eating random things in the desert, he was down three men by the end of the expedition. The amazing thing is that those three men walk away from the expedition of the own free will. The expedition didn’t kill them. (Although they were killed by either some Indians or some Mormons, but that is a tale in and of itself.)

We had a rousing conversation about the beauty of the canyon, and the idiocy of the Powell expedition. There seems to be a certain class of human (males of European decent) that seem to think running off into the middle of nowhere and nearly getting themselves killed.

I also drank a Starbucks salted caramel signature hot chocolate.

Because She is a big fan of Kitty Pryde, we are going to see the Watchmen a second time.

Seriously. We went to our Local Friendly Comic store, and the owner was bagging up some comics she’d just purchased. Yes. Our LFCB store is owned by a woman. The comics included the first appearances of Kitty Pryde. We purchased high quality issues of X-Men #129 and #143 (143 is the first issue she read). The bill came to over one hundred dollars.

As we made the purchase, the conversation drifted to the movie, and she gave us tickets.

However, I had to rush home and take care of my new baby. I gots me a netbook. It needed software and updating. She took care of most of the heavy lifting. Tonight we see it in IMAX. Watchmen, not my netbook.

Endings, Beginnings, and the Push by Canadian Troops on Falaise

There is no comic today (5/13/09). You can see that. Work (which is usually awesome), has leaving me wiped out. We are suffering from “product launch” and there are simply too many things to do. I’ve come home and not had the energy to work on comics. My creative juices have been depleted. Thusly, my buffer has been depleted. However, I hope that I can scrape together enough entertainment to post. I am a monkey who is hauled out to dance for you.

I don’t mean that in a derogatory sense for either of us. I make a funny strip. If I didn’t want to entertain you, I really shouldn’t have put this website up. Really.

For your part, if you aren’t entertained (in some fashion), why are you coming to the site? This a mutual experience. If watching this monkey dance, I am happy to dance for you. Which is why I’m a little sad that I don’t have a comic today.

However the project that has soaked up so much of my energy has ended (mostly). I am starting to recharge my batteries.

On Monday, I saw a film that is a reboot of a television franchise that was created in the 1960s. If you need any more clues about the film, I will say that the characters are “culturally iconic”, and that the film caused me to pee my pants with its awesomeness.

On Tuesday, we had our traditional date night. That is to say, we hauled out a boardgame and had at each other. As is typical with date night, we played Memoir ‘44. As mentioned in previous posts, She often does better than I do. We’re playing a “Grand Campaign” (a series of linked scenarios where the outcome of one game has an impact on the set-up of the next).

After a series of defeats, I lead my Canadian troops into the town of Falaise and an overall win of the Grand Campaign.

OK. Not a big win. In fact, the Grand Campaign was decided by the tie-breaker (33 to 30).

I’m going to spend one more night playing hookey from comics to go our monthly classic book group. Tonight we explore Ringworld. I was going to try and construct a literally/literaturely pun, but the art of words isn’t coming to me today.
